The First Love Story: Dakshayani" by Dr. Shubhankar Mishra

There are some books that feel less like fiction and more like a spiritual experience. "The First Love Story: Dakshayani" by Dr. Shubhankar Mishra was exactly that for me.

What stayed with me most was not just the story of Shiva and Sati, but the emotional depth behind it. We often see Lord Shiva as detached, meditative, beyond worldly emotions; but this book beautifully explores a different side of him. A side that feels love, loss, longing, and devotion so deeply that it almost humanises the divine without ever taking away its grandeur.

The narrative begins with an interesting lens:  two neurologists trying to understand divine love through neuroscience, and from there, it slowly unfolds into something much larger and more profound. As a reader, I felt like I wasn’t just reading mythology; I was travelling through time, witnessing the birth of emotions, sacrifice, ego, destruction, and eternal love.

What I genuinely appreciated was how rooted the story felt. The author doesn’t simply retell popular versions we’ve grown up hearing through television serials or social media snippets. Knowing that the book draws from authentic scriptures like the Shiva Mahapurana, Linga Purana, and Bhagavatam gave the story a certain weight and authenticity that made the experience even more immersive.

But beyond the mythology, what touched me most was the portrayal of Dakshayani herself. Her love wasn’t fragile or ornamental, it was fierce, devoted, and transformative. And Shiva’s love for her felt timeless, almost cosmic. There were moments in the book that genuinely made me pause and reflect on how love, in its purest form, is not possession but surrender.

The writing has a cinematic and philosophical quality to it. Some scenes feel grand and divine, while others feel deeply intimate and emotional. The excerpt where Shiva, despite being the lord of time, feels overwhelmed by emotions and whispers “Shakti” with tears in his eyes, that moment stayed with me long after I closed the book.

For me, this book was not just about mythology. It was about understanding devotion, energy, balance, grief, and the kind of love that transcends lifetimes.

If you enjoy mythological fiction that feels emotional, researched, spiritual, and deeply reflective, then this book is definitely worth picking up.

And somewhere between the pages, I realised; perhaps the first love story was never just about two beings falling in love. It was about the union of consciousness and energy itself. ✨
